Phil Mickelson gives up 5 shot lead on Sunday, but rallies to birdie 2 of last 3 holes to win Northern Trust Open

It wasn't pretty, but Phil Mickelson will take it. Playing erratic off the tee, Phil Mickelson gutted out a victory after he gave up a 5-shot lead on Sunday to Steve Stricker. Stricker bogeyed 18 to open the door to Phil's comeback. Phil birdied 16 and 17, and then got up and down for par on 18 to win by 1 stroked. Phil won, but he was lucky to escape the way he did. His swing flaw off the tee is very worrisome.

Is Butch Harmon to blame for Phil Mickelson's swing flaw off the tee?

Phil Mickelson is a magician around the green. On the tee, it's a different story. Phil's driving is a mess. It is what cost him the 2006 U.S. Open at Winged Foot.

Enter Butch Harmon in 2007 to fix Phil's swing flaw off the tee. But the results don't seem there yet. Yesterday, CBS analyst Peter Kostis broke it down on video. It didn't look pretty. Phil's left knee goes out away from his body, instead of towards his right knee, causing a gap between his legs and Phil to hang back on his left side.

Maybe Butch is working on this problem, but maybe he's not doing a good enough job? Tiger Woods had problems off the tee, but that was one of the reasons Tiger left Butch for Hank Haney. Haney seems to have improved Tiger's erraticness off the tee. Butch is the same guy who boldly predicted in 2007 that Phil would overtake Tiger at No. 1. Doesn't seem to be working out yet.

So, dear Readers, after 2 years does Butch Harmon share some of the blame for not fixing Phil Mickelson's noticeable swing flaw off the tee?

SwingVision - Tiger Woods Driver

To commemorate Tiger Woods' return to the tour this week at the Accenture World Match Play Championship, I dug up a SwingVision video from a couple of years ago showing him hitting driver off the tee. As you can see, Tiger tees the ball low for greater control. If he teed it higher, like , he'd be able to . But if there's one thing Tiger doesn't lack, it's distance! Boy, I sure do miss those SwingVision close ups of ball impact, don't you?

Can Tiger Woods win 5 matches to get to Accenture Match Play final on Sunday?

Tiger Woods is returning to tournament play on Wednesday at the Match Play Championship. He's picked a potentially tough tournament to return, depending on how the opponents line up. Here's the bracket.

First round against Aussie Brendan Jones should be easy for Woods, assuming he is playing as well as O'Meara says. One thing in Jones's favor is that he's from Australia, the home also of Nick O'Hern, the only player to beat Tiger twice in match play. A second round match up with Retief Goosen would be very intriguing, as would a third round with 19 year old Rory McIlroy. Fourth round against Geoff Ogilvy would be tough. Fifth round against Vijay Singh (or Phil Mickelson) would be fun. Of course, match play is fluky and none of these players is guaranteed winning.

So, what say you, dear Readers: will Tiger Woods win 5 matches to get to the finals?

Phil Rolls a 62 at Hogans Alley

Natural amphitheater: the 18th hole at Riviera. (McCoy/Flickr)

HORSES FOR COURSES. Phil Mickelson likes Riviera. The Poa annua greens and kikuya grass that give other players fits do not unnerve the boy who grew up in Southern California.

Phil fired a 9-under 62 on Saturday at the Northern Trust Open, one stroke off the course record set by Ted Tryba in 1999. This after a first-round 63. Lefty is on a roll at Hogans Alley.

Can he hang on to his four-shot advantage in Sundays final round?

Every shot is critical, Phil said. But the key for me tomorrow is going to be playing a good, solid round. I need to hit the ball like I did today. I need to roll it like I did today. And if I can shoot a number, I'll be very hard to catch.

Phil will play with Andres Romero and 49-year-old Fred Couples, who is five shots back and hopes to go low and snag one more win in his last hurrah on the PGA Tour.

Tiger Woods to play next week Accenture Match Play

Tiger Woods is playing next week at the Match Play Championship. The PGA needs him, Commissioner Tim Finchem needs him, but I don't see this as a good tournament for Tiger's return. Match play is way too flukey. If Tiger has a slow start, he may be out in the 1st round. That would be a letdown.

PGA launches video to announce Tiger's return; how desperate is the PGA?

Desperately seeking Tiger. This all but confirms that Tim Finchem's future as PGA Commissioner rides on Tiger Woods's return.

[Source: The Golf Blog]

Does Tim Finchem's job as PGA Commissioner depend on Tiger Woods?

Who is the happiest person at Tiger Woods's return to the PGA Tour? You guessed it, it's PGA Commissioner Tim Finchem. In Tiger's absence, the PGA Tour has suffered abysmal TV ratings, lost sponsors, and is less popular than maybe bowling in these tough economic times. The Buick Invitational, for example, was down 30% in attendance.

So what did Finchem say about Tiger's return: "We are delighted that Tiger is returning to competition and look forward to watching him compete next week."

As we've noted here and here, The Golf Blog believes that 2009 is a make or break year for Tim Finchem as Commissioner. It was his extravagant idea for the bloated and excessive FedEx Cup playoff system in golf, with $10 million escrow payouts to the winner. The FedEx Cup has failed to increase golf's popularity, but it has increased the tour's expenses. Who thinks Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh should get another $10 million on top of what they already make? Even worse, under Finchem's tenure, the price of admission to PGA events has escalated, along with even the price of water, making it extremely difficult for average Americans to go to a PGA tournament. (I remember one tournament when we were all searched at the entrance and had to throw away our bottled water. It was a hot, humid August day if you're wondering!) The past 9 months without Tiger Woods have proven one thing: the PGA Tour's business success for the past decade can be attritubed to one man. And it ain't Tim Finchem.

Did losing weight (and man boobs) screw up Phil Mickelson's golf game?

The golf media are buzzing with articles questioning whether Phil Mickelson is in a slump, after his lackluster play at the FBR, Buick, and AT&T--3 tournaments where Phil has usually played well. Mickelson is No. 182 in driving accuracy, 145 in greens hit, and 126 in putting. For some of the critical articles, see here, here, here, and here.

After a promising start with coach Butch Harmon in 2007, it now looks like Phil has taken one step forward, and two back. So what is the reason for Phil's ills? Age? Lack of practice? Mental?

Let me suggest another possibility: his weight loss. Phil looks a lot fitter and trimmer than 2007, but his weight loss may take some getting used to. We've seen this before with David Duval (who became a fitness fanatic and then was never the same), and Darren Clarke (who slimmed down for a short time without results). When you played with one body shape for years, the muscle memory will probably be thrown off with a new body shape. Don't get me wrong, Phil Mickelson looks a lot better without man-boobs, but maybe their loss is now affecting his swing.

So what say you, dear Readers, should Phil bring back the man boobs to help his game?

Caddy Steve Williams: Tiger Woods had to modify swing to accommodate knee injury

Tiger's caddy Steve Williams has some revealing comments out in New Zealand. Steve says Tiger is a "few weeks away" from returning and will be back mentally stronger.

But then here's the quote I found most revealing: "He's had to modify his swing a little bit to accommodate his knee, but the guy always finds a way. I'm a little nervous myself to see how he's going to come back."

I take it that Steve means Tiger had to change his swing after the surgery for his reconstructed knee. That would make sense because my friend just had ACL reconstruction and said that Tiger might have to adjust his swing, given all the rotation on the left knee (especially the violent knee action Tiger used to use to get more distance). If Tiger has changed his swing somewhat, it will be interesting to see this version of Tiger Woods on the course. Can't wait.

UPDATE: My guess is that Tiger's people have orchestrated the several recent statements about Tiger from Mark O'Meara and now Stevie Williams. These comments were not made without Tiger's blessing.

Butch Harmon wonders if Tiger Woods hurt his chances of breaking Jack Nicklaus's record of 18 majors -- is this reverse psychology to motivate Tiger?

TGC's Mercer Baggs reports that Butch Harmon has questioned Tiger Woods's decision to play the U.S. Open last year on his injured knee. Butch wonders if it hurt his chances of breaking Jack Nicklaus's record of 18 major.

Unfortunately, Mercer Baggs does not provide an actual quote from Butch, so we don't know his actual quote and whether Baggs has taken it out of context.

Anyway, my guess is that Butch Harmon is trying to use reverse psychology to motivate Tiger Woods to win 4 majors this year to tie Jack Nicklaus. Thanks, Butch!

How many tournaments do you have to lose until it starts getting to your head?

So I heard an amazing stat. Michelle Wie has played in over 50 tournaments without a victory on the LPGA tour. Wow, that's an amazing number without a victory, including several near misses (and even collapses).

Michelle Wie finishes 2nd at SBS Open after blowing 3 shot lead with 9 holes to play; Angela Stanford wins

Playing in her home state of Hawaii, Michelle Wie looked destined to make a huge statement in her 1st tourney as a LPGA member. Rolling in putts left and right, Michelle opened up a 3 stroke lead heading into the back nine of the final round of the SBS Open at Turtle Bay. Apparently, Michelle watched a lot of Tiger because she was fist pumping with every birdie made.

Then the wheels came unhinged. Wie double-bogeyed 11 after flailing a fairway wood off the tee into some junk on the right. Meanwhile, playing partner Angela Stanford got hot, rattling 3 straight birdies to take a 2 shot lead. Wie could have pulled things to 1-stroke down, but she yipped a 3 foot birdie putt on 16. Game over.

I got a chance to watch the final 9 holes. Michelle Wie looked so nervous she could have been a mattress, given how tightly coiled she was. No doubt she must have felt like the tournament was hers to win--or lose--after opening up a 3-shot lead with only 9 to play. I was a little bit surprised her caddy didn't try to crack a few jokes to lighten her mood because she looked so tense down the stretch. Only when she was too far down to Stanford did Wie break a smile. Might have been better this time around if her dad was caddying. Maybe he could have settled Michelle down.

Parting shots: Angela Stanford is an incredible player, clearly on the rise. From a business perspective for the LPGA, though, would have been far better had Michelle Wie won. Oh well.

Betty Jameson Was an LPGA Pioneer

I CANT SAY I KNEW of Hall of Fame golfer Betty Jameson until Don Van Natta brought her to my attention today in an email. Jameson was one of 13 women who founded the LPGA in 1950. Others included Patty Berg, Louise Suggs and Babe Didrikson Zaharias.

Jameson died a week ago in Florida. She was 89.

Don called Jameson one of the games first glamour girls, and had the good fortune to interview her for his upcoming book on Zaharias.

Betty gave me an amazing interview for Wonder Girl in south Florida in late 2004, and I stayed in touch with her a bit, Don told me. She won the 1947 U.S Women's Open in Greensboro, N.C. - she shot a seven-over par 295, the first time a woman had broken 300 in a 72-hole tournament.

The LPGA began with 14 tournaments and less than $50,000 in prize money. This year the women will play in 30 tournaments in 10 countries for nearly $55 million. Jameson helped make it possible.

She was very funny and had an interesting love-hate relationship with Babe, added Don.

Jameson won 10 events on the tour and made about $90,000, good money in those early years. Famed golf writer Herbert Warren Wind was so impressed by her accuracy that he compared her to Ben Hogan.

Watch Uneven Fairways

AT THE PGA MERCHANDISE SHOW, I enjoyed a special treat: a preview screening of Uneven Fairways, a Golf Channel documentary about the Negro leagues of professional golf.

(Lee Elder)

The program profiles the African-American golfers who were not allowed to compete on the PGA Tour due to the Caucasian-only clause (finally removed in 1961). So the men started their own tour, the United Golf Association (UGA).

The show consists mostly of interviews with players such as Charlie Sifford, Pete Brown, Jim Thorpe, Calvin Peete and a few others (James Black, for instance) who you probably have never heard of (and wont soon forget). Theres also historic footage, including film of the legendary Ted Rhodes and Bill Spiller.

Three of golfs giants - Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods - also appear to pay tribute to golfs African-American pioneers. Samuel Jackson is the host and narrator.

After the preview screening, I shook the hand of Pete McDaniel, who co-wrote Uneven Fairways, and is the author of Uneven Lies and a Golf Digest columnist. Well done, I said. Maybe youll agree. But first you have to watch.

Uneven Fairways airs tonight (Wednesday, February 11) at 9 p.m. on the Golf Channel.

My Wife Breaks Tiger Baby News to Me

The proud father. (Keith Allison/Flickr)

HOW DID YOU HEAR about the birth of Charlie Axel Woods? My wife told me. Thats right, my wife. Its a perfect reminder of the enormity of Tiger Woods.

Oh, she said this morning while I was sipping my first cup of coffee. Did you hear that Tiger and his wife had their baby? Its a boy.

My wife knows a few things about golf through ARMCHAIR GOLF osmosis, but most of it escapes her like a bad slice in a crossing wind. But she knew about the birth of Tigers second child. Before me. (Not that I have a problem with that.)

It does makes me wonder how many people on the planet who know little or nothing about golf know that Tiger Woods is now the proud father of a baby boy. Im going to take a wild stab and say 3.1 billion.

The legend just keeps growing.

Separation at the Buick Invitational

WITH THE THIRD ROUND UNDERWAY, Camilo Villegas and John Rollins have separated themselves from the pack at the Buick Invitational. Both players currently stand at 11-under par, five shots clear of Nick Watney and Paul Goydos.

Villegas hit only four fairways in the second round, but a hot putter kept him at the top of the leaderboard. The Columbian is bidding for his third PGA Tour win.

Tournament notes.
The cut mark was 146, two-over par. Phil Mickelson made it with four shots to spare.

David Duval watch.
Several people have stopped by in search of information on David Duval. David missed the cut in his first two 2009 starts at the Bob Hope Classic and FBR Open, although he did card three 68s and a 70 at the Hope. Unfortunately, his 14-under total fell short of the 72-hole cut in the 90-hole event. His next scheduled event is the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

Should Tim Finchem be fired in 2009?

2009 should be a make or break year for PGA Commissioner Tim Finchem. His lame-brained idea for the FedEx Cup, with $10 million escrow payouts to the victors (Tiger Wood and Vijay Singh), has done nothing to raise the popularity of the PGA Tour, while at the same time overextending the tour financially.

If the PGA Tour wants to use "gimmicks" to generate fan interest, The Golf Blog has the perfect gimmick: use the $10 million payout from the FedEx on a bonus or "bounty" to whatever player can beat Tiger Woods after he is leading or tied for a tournament after 54 holes. The bonus could be $5 million for a regular tourney, or $10 million for a major. Whoever can beat Tiger Woods after he has a 54 hole lead gets the bonus. (And if Tiger wins, no one gets a bonus.) Sound like an off-the-wall idea? Sure, but at least it would generate more attention for the tour than Finchem's lame-brained idea of a "playoff" system. When you have 4 majors, "playoffs" in golf are a farce.

So how can Finchem save his job? Well, a lot is out of his hands and in the hands of Tiger Woods. Tiger is the best marketing for the Tour, so his comeback this year is essential. But Finchem will need to (1) make sure to keep all the sponsors invested in golf despite the tough economic conditions and (2) start making the PGA events more affordable to the average American. Ticket prices at tour events should be lowered, and so should the price of water! Golf should be a sport for everyone, not just the wealthy.

UPDATE: There was a mandatory players meeting at the Buick Invitational. Everyone knows the state of sponsors for the PGA Tour is fragile, and the PGA Tour could be facing some tough times. Tim Fichem is trying to require Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson and other big names to show up to every tournament at least once every 4 year ("1 in 4 rule"). Things are beginning to sound desperate. But Finchem still doesn't get it. He needs to address first the biggest mistake he's made in his tenure: the lame-brained idea of a playoff system in the FedEx Cup with $10 million escrow payouts to the winner. Stop bleeding the PGA Tour on a gimmick. College football needs a playoff system, but golf doesn't, especially not at a cost of $10 million plus.

Does Tiger Woods even need a rival for his career?

So all of the great comments this week have made me think: does Tiger Woods really need a true rival during his career? What would a true rival add? A number of commenters seem content with Tiger playing against the record books, and that's it.

Maybe that's good enough. But I kinda wonder what we're missing if Tiger Woods has no true rival for his entire career?

What say you, dear readers?

Roger Federer cries uncontrollably @ tennis match; should there be crying in golf?

OK, The Golf Blog has received a lot of comments about tennis star Roger Federer's crying after losing the Australian Open to Rafael Nadal. Click here for the video of Federer crying. Federer's crying probably was due to the realization that Rafael Nadal is better than he, even though Federer is supposed to be the best player ever to play (or at least one of them).

This brings us to the Question of the Day: should there be crying after golf tournaments? We already referred to Tiger Woods's emotional victory after his dad died. But what about just crying after losing a tournament? Is that OK? Here's a sample of Brandt Snedeker crying after losing the Masters:

Is crying good for golf?

Tiger Woods gets beat badly at Tiger Woods Golf by EA Sports; Tiger talks about Roger Federer's loss to Nadal

Mike and Mike in the morning interviewed Tiger Woods today on their radio show. You can find the radio clip by clicking here.

Tiger says he's working full bore on his swing, but in limited chunks. He hopes to get his ball count up soon. He also admits that he got routed at golf on EA Sports Tiger Woods golf game at a recent promotion event.

Tiger also talked about Roger Federer's loss to Rafael Nadal. He said they are playing at a different level; it's fun to watch. But interestingly, Tiger didn't mention anything personal about his friend Fed and what he must be feeling.

Tiger Woods looks forward to second baby and returning to golf

Tiger Woods reports:

"I did some work with Hank Haney for a few days last week and it's all good. I'm full-bore with my practice sessions and have no restrictions; it's just a matter of getting my golf endurance up. I don't have my golf stamina back yet.

"Many people have asked me if my swing has changed since the surgery, and the answer is no. I'm doing all the things I've been trying to do for a long time, but I can actually hit into my left leg without my bones moving. It's a nice feeling! It is so much better than it ever has been because my bones aren't grinding against each other. As for my length, I can't tell if I'm longer. I do know that I've lost two pounds since I won the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines last June and weigh 185.

As for my comeback to the PGA Tour, a lot depends on the baby, which is due pretty soon. That takes precedent over anything I do golf-wise. Elin, Sam and I are very excited for the new baby to arrive, although that's when the real lack of sleep begins. But I must admit, I am also excited about returning to competition. Early on, I didn't miss golf because I enjoyed staying home with Elin and Sam and I knew I wasn't physically able to play. The truth is, I would have embarrassed myself. Now, I'm getting my feel and practice back. It's just a matter of playing more on the course.

What advice did Tiger Woods give his buddy Roger Federer after he lost Australian and cried uncontrollably?

Tiger Woods and Roger Federer developed a special friendship when both men were considered the best players in their sport, perhaps ever. But then a funny thing happened in the last two years, upstart Rafael Nadal rained on Federer's parade and started beating him not just on clay, but on every surface, including grass and hardcourts where Federer supposedly had the edge.

This past weekend, Nadal's dominance over him was too much for Federer to bear. After the match, Roger was reduced to crying uncontrollably. Here's a photo.

In fact, Tiger Woods was never been in the kind of situation that Federer now faces: someone else has overtaken not only No.1, but has also owned him on every surface. So what advice can Tiger give to his friend Roger?

Well, here's one piece of advice Tiger can give: "Roger, consider getting a coach!! I was stubborn at one point and didn't have a coach after Butch, but then I started working with Hank Haney. The best decision of my career."

Dear readers, what else should Tiger tell Roger?

Tiger Woods to play golf with Pres. Obama

Tiger says:

"President Obama recently asked me to speak at the inauguration opening ceremony at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. It was such an honor to be invited and be a part of history and to speak about something that means so much to me, our men and women in the military. He was very busy, so we didn't get to talk much. I didn't want to get in his way. I did ask him if he wanted to play golf and he said, 'I'd love to.' So we'll make it happen. I think the thing that impressed me the most about him was the way he carries himself. He has great leadership qualities, and his accomplishment truly embodies what's best about America. He represents what we as Americans have in common, not perceived differences."

Why doesn't Tiger Woods have a real rival?

OK, you are probably sick of hearing about the amazing rivalry between Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer in tennis--although Rafa now owns Federer, it wasn't always that away. Their rivalry has provided some of the most amazing tennis matches--the epic final at Wimbledon might be the best ever.

So their rivalry got me wondering: why it is that Tiger Woods has had no serious or consistent rival for more than a decade on tour? Jack Nicklaus had Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Lee Trevino, and Tom Watson (for a year, Johnny Miller). But Tiger has no one. Zip. Zilch. Sure, people like Hal Sutton, Rich Beem, and maybe one or two others beat Tiger in a big tournament going down the stretch. But these are all isolated incidents, not a rivalry.

So, dear readers, what's the answer?

A. Tiger Woods is so much better than the competition (or the competition is just not that good)

B. Luck

C. Fluke

D. Fixed

E. Other reason

Ive recently added a Titleist 503h 19-degree Hybrid to my bad to find the gap between the 5 wood and 3 iron. Private Golf Clubs Lower Age Requirements

IN A DESPERATE ATTEMPT to bolster revenue, private golf clubs are taking extraordinary steps to recruit new members and golfers. Many, in fact, are revising their membership criteria, including the abandonment of long-held age requirements.

One thing that hasnt changed is locker room trash talking, even from the youngest new members:

Will Tiger Woods ever face his Rafael Nadal?

Woke up early to watch the Australian Open final pitting Rafael Nadal (22 years old) against Roger Federer (27 years old). For the past several years, Federer has dominated everyone in tennis ... except Nadal. First, Nadal beat Federer at the French Open and kept on beating him each year. But Federer owned the hardcourts and Wimbledon. But last year Nadal beat Federer at Wimbledon in 5 epic sets. And, today, Nadal beat Federer on hardcourts at the Australian Open, again in 5 sets.

Federer is 1 major shy of tying Pete Sampras for the most majors ever at 14. But the way things are looking, that 1 more major will be a major hurdle. Federer looked visibly nervous and rattled today at the pressure moments.

It got me wondering: will Tiger Woods ever face a serious rival who can beat him? or is breaking Jack Nicklaus's record of 18 majors a foregone conclusion? What say you, readers? Can Tiger Woods be so good or so lucky that he goes through his entire career without any rival at all?

Phil Mickelson fails to make cut @ FBR in Arizona: sign of things to come?

Phil Mickelson didn't make the cut at his first PGA event of 2009. Quite frankly, his swing -- supposedly under the watchful eye of Butch Harmon -- looked very loose this week.

Maybe Phil was incredibly rusty. But that's really no excuse for looking so out of form at an Arizona course that is one of Phil's favorites.
