Tiger Woods: going undefeated in 2008 is possible

Some of our commenters scoffed at my suggestion that Tiger Woods could run the table and go undefeated for 2008. I guess I don't see why people think this is somehow impossible. Tiger practically never misses a cut, and when he's playing even his B-game, he's pretty unbeatable. The guy's won 6 in a row, so I'm puzzled why people think he can't go 15-0 this year (or however many tourneys he plays).

Just for the record, Tiger himself has said his goal is to go undefeated this year:

"I have been asked whether I think I can go undefeated this year. I pointed out that when I was 11, I went 36-0, so I've already had a perfect season. Is it realistic? No. But why would you go to a tournament if you don't think you can win? That's my expectation of myself. That's the way I think and how I've always played golf."

Charlie Sifford, Golf Pioneer

I knew what I was getting into when I chose golf. Hell, I knew I'd never get rich and famous. All the discrimination, the not being able to play where I deserved and wanted to play in the end I didn't give a damn. I was made for a tough life, because I'm a tough man. And in the end I won; I got a lot of black people playing golf. That's good enough. If I had to do it over again, exactly the same way, I would.
- Charlie Sifford, Golf Digest, December 2006

A black caddie from a poor family in Charlotte, North Carolina, Charlie Sifford dared to play professional golf with white men. It was not a friendly game for Charlie. He endured open heckling, insults and who knows what else.

(Photo: elriogolfcourse.com)

But someone had to go first, so the resolute Sifford embarked on the PGA Tour in the 1960s and scratched out a living, including wins at the 1967 Greater Hartford Open and the 1969 Los Angeles Open. In 2004 Charlie Sifford was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

I saw Charlie three times last year, in Savannah, Hickory (North Carolina) and Baltimore. Twice I shook his hand and once I spoke with him.

Charlie was stroking putts on the practice putting green at the Senior Players Championship in Baltimore last September. Its a rare opportunity to talk to the Jackie Robinson of a sport, and I took it.

How are you doing Charlie? I asked.

Charlie had a heart problem that prevented him from playing golf, but he wasnt about to miss a Grand Champions event, an ambassador of sorts riding around in a cart and swapping stories in the dining room. I cant remember our conversation exactly, except that he was getting along OK and hoped his doctor would clear him soon to play golf again.

I do remember it was just the two of us on that putting green on a bright September morning. I felt lucky to be in the presence of a true pioneer.

As part of Black History Month, the Golf Channel has a video tribute to Charlie Sifford here.

Sergio Garcia and Boo Weekley feud

Golf.com has an interesting account about the bad blood between Sergio Garica and Boo Weekley. It stems back to last year when Weekley made a mistake in adding up Garcia's scorecard, which Garcia then signed, propmting his disqualification from the PGA Championship.

As luck would have it, the two were paired together at the Match Play last week. Garcia allegedly made a noise before Weekley was about to point, reminiscent of Seve Ballesteros in Ryder Cup play. Gotta love the gamesmanship! But Garcia still lost.

Tilghman and Faldo: Corporate Shills?

During the television coverage of last week's Accenture Match Play Championship, there seemed to be enough promotion to rival a Ron Popeil infomercial. Only it wasn't Ron plugging stuff but the Golf Channel's on-air personalities, Kelly Tilghman and . Every time a player hit the new Nike SQ Sumo square driver, Kelly was sure to identify the driver and comment about how much that player loves its performance. During the final match between Tiger and Stewart Cink, Kelly made sure to point out that the "Swoosh" was well represented in the tournament with Nike staffers Woods, Cink and Leonard making it to the semis. Is Kelly trying to make amends with Tiger over the "Lynch him in a back alley" incident or is there some kind of undisclosed relationship between her and Nike? Whatever the reason, it is suspicious at best that she made no similar comments about other golf manufacturers or equipment.

Tilghman's booth-mate was even guiltier of thinly-veiled promotion. Faldo did his best to sneak in plugs for his current endorser, TaylorMade Adidas Golf. Faldo made it a point to talk about players using the new TaylorMade Monza Spider putter with success. But even worse, he took an opportunity to bash his former endorser, Nike, while extolling the performance of TaylorMade's new golf ball. Nick went out of his way to highlight Golf Magazine's recent golf ball test results that showed the new TaylorMade TP ball bested the Nike One Platinum by 20 yards with a driver (90 mph swingspeed). C'mon Nick, was it just a mere coincidence that you happen to choose your current company's ball to compare against that of your old company? I think not. It was quite a cheap shot you old bloke!

Sadly, this isn't the first time that golf announcers have utilized their abundant air time to serve as pitchmen. In the past, I can recall and Johnny Miller will still occasionally mention Callaway. It's just that this kind of conflict of interest has never been as blatant before as it is now. If an announcer has a relationship with another company, it needs to be disclosed upfront. When I tune into a golf broadcast, I want golf coverage, not an infomercial. It's not like this kind of advertising is effective anyway. How stupid do they think we are?! Now I wonder where I can demo that new Nike driver and buy a box of those hot TaylorMade balls...

293rd Time Is a Charm for Brian Gay

After 14 years and 292 career starts, 36-year-old Brian Gay got his first win on Sunday at the Mayakoba Golf Classic in Cancun, Mexico. Brian shot rounds of 66, 67, 62 and 69 for a 16-under total of 264, a new tournament record.

Im a sap. I like first-time winners, especially journeyman types who have been toiling at this fickle game for years. Way to go, Brian.

Did he have doubts about winning during the final round?

I knew I was confident and playing well, Brian said at the post-tournament media conference. I had to just keep going a shot at a time and pick my targets and make good swings.

Any advice for the young guys coming up?

Work on your short game. Do lots of chipping and putting, Brian said. I don't hit it far, but if you can make putts you can always be in the game.

Brian slept on the lead, too, not an easy way to get your first win. Then again, there is no easy way to get your first win.

Can Tiger Woods run the table in 2008 and go undefeated?

Tiger Woods got past a huge hurdle in his quest for perfection in 2008. Today, he routed Stewart Cink, 8 and 7, in the 36-hole finale to the World Match Play Championship. Match play is more volatile than stroke play, so Tiger winning this championship has set him up to run the table in 2008. JB Holmes had Tiger 3 down with 5 to go in the 1st match, and in the quarterfinal Aaron Baddeley had a chance to put Tiger away with at least 2 very makeable birdie putts. Of course, Tiger escaped both rounds with a victory.

Tiger has now won 6 tourneys in a row dating back to last year. He has won all 3 tourneys he has played in 2008. He looks resolved to win every tournament this year, not just the Grand Slam.

If he does, it would be the greatest feat in golf ever.

Tiger Woods: There Was Blood Everywhere

Tiger Woods (Eddie Honeyfield/Flickr)

Fore right!

Even the greatest golfer on the planet occasionally sprays a drive. In a marvelous match yesterday against Aaron Baddeley at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, Tiger Woods pushed his tee shot at the par-4 13th and bonked a marshal on the head. Tiger's ball bounced off and rolled into the desert. After taking an unplayable lie, he lost the hole.

Meanwhile, the marshal lost some blood, although Tiger said he was OK.

He was totally alert, Woods was quoted as saying. There was blood everywhere. I didn't see any knot. He said he was fine.

Maybe the marshal felt better after Tiger gave him a glove.

Today Tiger dispatched K.J. Choi and Henrik Stenson. Tomorrow he faces Stewart Cink in the 36-hole final.

Exit Strategy at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship

Lee Westwood (Speedpics/Flickr)

This is the kind of week where you kind of unpack but you don't move stuff too far away from your suitcase.
-Lee Westwood

Brandt Snedeker ran into a buzz saw yesterday in his first match at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, his agent told me today. Snedeker, a No. 12 seed in the Gary Player bracket, was four under after 16 holes and lost to No. 5 seed Lee Westwood 3 and 2.

Still, as you can see from the above quote Westwood wasnt in a chest-beating mood. Match play is unpredictable.

Case in point: As hot as Westwood was yesterday, he currently finds himself two down to Justin Leonard and is running out of holes.

If youre not hitting it close to the hole, you better keep your stuff close to the suitcase.

Adam Scott: Tiger's Top Challenger?

Butch Harmon believes that one of his current pupils is best poised to take down his former star student, Tiger Woods. Who would that be, you ask? Phil Mickelson would have been a good guess. However, it's not the Joker, but the White Tiger, Adam Scott. According to ESPN, Harmon said, "He (Scott) is the only one who can challenge Tiger Woods in the next four or five years. He's the only one I see of the young players with all the things it takes to get close to Tiger Woods."

That's a pretty bold statement. IMHO, Scott just doesn't possess the short game or putting skills to put him anywhere close to Tiger. On top of that, he hasn't exhibited that "I'm gonna rip your throat out" killer instinct that is a prerequisite for all great athletes. Tiger simply owns the best mental game in golf and no one will be able to beat him on a consistent basis as long as his body holds up.

However, the current #5 player in the world does many things that rival and may even exceed that of the world's #1. In particular, Adam Scott's full swing is a thing of beauty. In fact, it's almost an exact copy of Tiger's swing, circa 2000. I think it's one of the best golf swings of all-time and I was sorry to see Tiger abandon it due to stress on his left knee. But it's really amazing to see how well Adam has copied Tiger's old swing. A while ago, I posted a . It is one of my personal favorites and remains one of the most viewed videos on this site. Recently, I've uncovered another swing comparison video for your viewing pleasure:

It is quite apparent that Adam has copied Tiger's swing to the "tee". However, it is Tiger Wood's innate ability, intangibles and insane work ethic that will keep him well ahead of the pack over the foreseeable future. Does anyone really think otherwise?

WD for David Duval at Riviera

L.A. not fine for Duval.
(Eddie Honeyfield/Flickr)

I was scanning the first-round scores at the Northern Trust Open (L.A. Open) at Riviera Country Club when I spotted David Duval at the bottom of the list with a WD alongside his name.

Duval started on the back nine and shot a 41 with four bogeys and a double. After bogeying his first two holes on the front, David apparently had had enough.

The official reason for his withdrawal was a neck injury.

Duval is playing on a Major Medical Extension after caring for his wife and children for most of the 2007 season. He must win over $700,000 in 20 events to keep his playing privileges for the entire season.

Im not going to say he cant do it, but its looking real tough from where Im sitting. Duval has won a little more than a half million since 2004, most of that coming in 2006 when he earned $318,276 in 24 events.

47 year old Steve Lowery wins ATT over Singh, qualifies for Masters

After leader Vijay Singh rattled off 3 bogeys in the back nine, 47 year old Steve Lowery -- ranked No. 305 in the world -- took his opening. Lowery shot a 68 to sneak into a playoff with Singh and then won in a playoff. Now, Lowery's going to the Masters. Unbelievable.

Singh was pretty hard on himself after the round, stating: "I let this one slip away. I was in control, but those (bogeys) took a little air out of me. I still should have won the tournament. There's no excuse for that."

Wonder if this has anything to do with Vijay's swing changes from last year. I was surprised to hear that he was even changing his swing after it seemed so reliable that one year.

Why Chambers Bay Snagged the 2015 U.S. Open

(ChambersBayGolf.com)

Well, that didnt take long. Chambers Bay hasnt been open a year and it has already booked a U.S. Open. It will also host the 2010 U.S. Amateur.

We are excited to take the U.S. Open Championship and the U.S. Amateur to such an awesome site, Jim Hyler, chairman of the USGA Championship Committee, said in a statement.

This is the first time the U.S. Open has been to Washington and we are confident that the golf course will provide a challenging test for the best players in the world, as well as a great spectator experience for those who attend the event and watch it online and on television.

Judging from the photographs and most of what Ive read (see links below), the Robert Trent Jones Jr. and Bruce Charleton design is phenomenal.

Caddies Wife Tipped Me Off

The wife of a former Tour caddie I met at the Legends of Golf sounded the alert about Chambers Bay in April of last year.

Yesterday Gil (not his real name) caddied at the new Chambers Bay Golf Course in Tacoma, she wrote in an email. It isnt open yet so it was the FIRST time anyone played the course.

All the employees played for the experience and Gil got to caddy for the assistant pro. He said it is the most beautiful golf course he has ever seen. He has seen several, so thats quite a statement. Its located in University Place with a gorgeous view of Puget Sound. He also stated the elevation was absolutely astounding!

Gil will get to play the course for free if he caddies there occasionally, which thrilled him as it is very expensive. (Editor's note: up to $150/round.) He was so impressed with the course our entire dinner conversation revolved around it!

My first post last spring on Chambers Bay attracted a lot of comments. Most were positive, some were negative. You can read many of them here:

You can check out Chambers Bay here. And the live Web cam is here.

Ernie Els broods over another loss to Tiger

It was obviously a pretty disappointing way to end the tournament on Sunday. Id played great on Saturday to get myself into a position to win my fourth title here in Dubai. And then the front nine on Sunday I played really solid I mean, I could have easily been four or five under at that point. But the turning point was 11 and 12, where I missed a couple of putts there for back-to-back bogeys. Basically, thats what cost me the tournament; not the shot into the water on 18.

Phil Mickelson is slimmer but still loses in playoff at FBR

Phil Mickelson was sitting pretty in the clubhouse in Arizona at the FBR, with a 1 shot lead over JB Holmes. Holmes, who was driving the ball over 350 yards, birdied the last hole to force a playoff.

The CBS commentators were all wondering why Phil was sitting in the clubhouse, instead of keeping loose on the range. That commentary proved to be prescient, as Phil ended up hitting a very loose wedge from 130 yards to leave him practically no chance at a birdie. JB Holmes stuffed his sand wedge to 6 feet and won.

I have to give Phil some credit, though, for losing 20 pounds and his man-boobs during the off-season. He looks really great. What will Phil do next?

Off Course Heroics for Esteban Toledo

Journeyman Esteban Toledo might have some additional perspective on golf and life. This past week Toledo placed 21st in the Mexico Open, a Nationwide Tour event played in his homeland.

But it was the events of January 28 that Esteban cant get out of his mind. Toledo was riding in a hired car on the Pomona Freeway in the Los Angeles area when the vehicle in front of him lost control, rolled and came to rest upside down in the fast lane.

The driver of Toledos car parked in front of the wrecked vehicle and the two men pulled two young women, sisters, from the wreckage and attended to them until paramedics arrived on the scene. One was bleeding and unable to speak. Both were released from the hospital the following day.

I thought the car might explode, the 45-year-old Toledo was quoted as saying.

I have a family. I wasnt sure what to do, but God spoke to me. I still have a hard time getting the images out of my mind, but I feel good about what I did. I know God put me there for a reason.

Tiger Woods wins in Dubai, overtaking Ernie Els

Tiger Woods had an off-day on Saturday, putting himself 4-strokes behind leader Ernie Els. Then, on Sunday, Tiger turned into Tiger again and shot a final round 7-under 65 including birdies on the final 2 holes, to win the Dubai Desert Classic by 1 stroke over Martin Kaymer. That makes it 5 tournament wins in a row dating back to 2007 for Tiger. It also keeps Tiger's perfect 2008 season intact. Tiger has not lost a tournament this year.

Big Ernie shot a disappointing 71 today, to finish two strokes behind Tiger. Ernie had a chance on 18 to force a playoff with a birdie, but unfortunately he found water after going for the green. Poor Ernie, a victory would have been a major step for his psyche. I'm reminded of this old quote attributed to Tiger Woods in 2006: "Tiger certainly doesn't hate Ernie other than some of his former agents, who could hate Ernie? but, before heading out with Els to play the third round at Hoylake in 2006, Woods turned to somebody on the practice putting green and said coldly, 'If I can break this big guy's heart just one more time, maybe he'll go away and stay away.'"

As everyone is talking about a Grand Slam and Tiger Woods' certain success in 2008, I cannot help but wonder if any of the presidential candidates have started reaching out to Team Tiger to seek his endorsement. Obviously, 2008 is an important and potentially historic year for lots of reasons other than Tiger's pursuit of all the majors.

I can imagine lots of reasons why all the leading candidates would want Tiger's support, and I can imagine lots of reasons why Tiger might want to avoid endorsing any candidate at any point in the 2008 election season. Nevertheless, golf and politics (not to mention golf and racial/gender issues) have a long and significant history in this country. Tiger surely knows this history and cares about lots of issues that transcend the game of golf.
Further, the 2008 Ryder Cup just happens to be in the US during the back nine of the 2008 election season. Were I working for a candidate, I would already be trying to figure how to get the most positive media exposure during this uniquely nationalistic event with perhaps the world's most famous athlete.
