The Golf Space logs 1,000,000th visitor
My “other” site is called The Golf Space. TGS is a free golf networking and community site. I’d say it’s everything for golfers that myspace is for strippers and teenagers, only without the porn and spam…
At TGS each member (over 2300 now) has his or her own profile, blog, matchmaker, photo galleries, golf equipment list, game overview, golf stats, golf records and a zillion more items. TGS also has monthly contests and golf prize giveaways from TGS sponsors.
Anyone, even other golf networking sites, can have a free account and network themselves or their products and services. Unlike many golf forums and sites out there, I don’t “ban” people just because they have a product or service that competes with a site sponsor and I don’t “ban” people because they are or aren’t affiliated with other golf sites who consider themselves “competitors.”
1,000,000
Some time while I was asleep last night the 1,000,000th visitor stopped by The Golf Space. TGS opened during Masters week 2006, so that puts the average at about 64,000 visitors per month. That’s “visitors” and not “hits.” Hits would be in the zillions…
I’m very happy to provide a free resource for golfers like TGS and I’m very happy to see the growth since it’s all from word of mouth advertising. TGS has no paid ads out there and mostly relies on new members generated by HOG and by other member referrals.
Spam free since December 2006
During the first half year or so TGS was hacked and brought down, and some spammers got in. They were posting erectile dysfunction spam, porn spam and other garbage. I implemented several countermeasures, like captcha and the “favorite pro golfer” fields to the profiles as a result. I’m happy to say those spammers haven’t gotten through since December 2006.
Say hello
Visit my profile and get a flavor for TGS if you haven’t already:

Armchair Q&A: John Coyne, Author of 'The Caddie Who Knew Ben Hogan'
Its been a few weeks since I completed The Caddie Who Knew Ben Hogan, a novel by John Coyne. Coyne is the author of more than 20 books, most of them horror novels, and a few of them golf books.I admit I was skeptical when I began reading Johns story set at the Midlothian Country Club in south Chicago, a real place where John caddied during his teens. How would I feel about the legendary Ben Hogan in a fictional account?
It worked, and not just because Coyne is a gifted storyteller. John knows his subjects golf, country club life in the 1940s, caddieing and Ben Hogan. To find out more, visit his site.
Last week John answered my questions about Hogan, Tiger Woods and other golf topics.
Armchair Golf: What do you think is important for golf fans in the Tiger Woods era to know about Ben Hogan?
John Coyne: Well, the most important thing is that there were other great players. Golf didnt begin with Tiger!
Tiger knows that. In fact, in the last years of Hogans life, Tiger called up Hogan, and Hogan back then this was the late 90s had seen Woods playing on television. Also, everyone in the golfing world knew these were Hogans last years and they were paying their respect. Tiger was paying his respect to one of the men who made professional golf a worthy and wealthy career.
Armchair Golf: What parallels do you see between Ben Hogan and Tiger Woods?
John Coyne: There are several. Their desire and need to win. They both shared the same ability to come back from defeat to victory. Their respect for golfs history, and this was a small, but important aspect, the presentation of the winning trophy.
Hogan, for example, would always have his dress clothes in the locker so that if he won, he would look like a champion. You see that same respectfulness from Tiger. But perhaps what is important is the way they continue to work at their game. Here Tiger is at the top of his game and he goes out and reinvents his swing. Until he could no longer play, Hogan was always working on his swing, as well as, working on making the perfect club.
Armchair Golf: Can you provide a snapshot of what golf was like in the 1940s?
John Coyne: My novel is set in the summer of 1946, the year Hogan won his first major. Hogan and all the pros were just getting out of the army. Nelson, McSpaden, Ed Dudley, Harry Cooper, Joe Kirkwood, Gene Sarazen, and a few other pros never were in the army, so there wasnt much competition during the war years in the few events that were staged.
Nelson, however, made the point in a 2006 interview with Golf Magazine that in 45 when he won 11 straight that Ben Hogan played in 18 events that year, and Snead played in 26 tournaments. And at the PGA Championship, which was then match play, Nelson beat Gene Sarazen, Mike Tunesa, Denny Shute and Claude Harmon.
By the end of war, there were only about a dozen pros who did nothing but play in tournaments. They werent home pros. Most of the pros made a living as home pros. There just wasnt enough money in the way of prizes to keep a pro playing all the time.
Armchair Golf: Why was that?
John Coyne: The big problem for the touring players was that the home pros of the PGA controlled the tournaments, prizes, and everything else, and the touring pros felt that they couldnt make a living just playing golf.
The only real money in terms of a golf event was the one sponsored by George S. May. He put on the All-American Open first in 1941. He also had amateur championships for men and women at his Tam OShanter Country Club in the northwest suburban of Chicago. He also had an invitational championship for a dozen pros with a winner-take-all purse of $10,000.
So there werent many pros playing full time nor was there much money. Also, according to the PGA, in 1946 the summer of this novel there were only about four thousand golf courses in the U.S. and about two and half million players.
Armchair Golf: As a novelist, youve said that story characters take on a life of their own. As you researched Hogan and then placed him in a fictional setting, did anything about him in real life or how he emerged in your book surprise you?John Coyne: Yes, the affection Hogan had for children, young caddies, his niece. Valerie and Ben did not have children. My guess is that they couldnt imagine having children and devoting their lives to the tour. Playing the tour in those early years was a tough job. No private jets. No campers. Hogan, in his later years, took an interest in the caddies at Shady Oaks, took an interest, too, in young pros trying to make it on tour. So, it wasnt much of a creative stretch to think of Hogan befriending a young caddie and sharing with him his [Hogans] philosophy of life.
Armchair Golf: Did you ever have any encounters with Ben Hogan?
John Coyne: No, my connection with Hogan was as a fan and knowing pros that played with Hogan. Both Jimmy Walkup, the pro at Midlothian Country Club south of Chicago, and Tony Holquin, the assistant pro, who then became the head pro, were from Texas and had played with Hogan. Later in life I came to know Jules Alexander he did the photos for a golf instructional book I did with pros from the senior tour entitled Playing With the Pros and he has a wonderful collection of Hogan photos, as well as stories about Hogan. Also, I got to know Harry Cooper in the last years of his life. Harry lived to be a hundred, and had been a pro from Texas who knew Hogan. And all of them had their own stories about meeting the Hawk.
Armchair Golf: Can you share a personal caddie story that was particularly memorable for you?
John Coyne: One small item comes to mind. In my novel, on page 252, I have young Jack checking the golf balls with a small ring. We would do that as caddies back in the forties and fifties because golf balls werent as well made as they are today, and might be banged out of shape. Also, the course I had them play, where Jack caddies, is the course where I worked, and I used those holes as my course, as well as, the design of the clubhouse.
Armchair Golf: As a former caddie and longtime student of the game, what life lessons has golf taught you?
John Coyne: Oh, I guess I would use the words that I put into Hogans letter to Jack Handley; it comes towards the end of the novel, on page 269, when Hogan writes:
After all these years, I am not so sure of all my comparisons between golf and life. But I do still believe if you live your life like you play golf, from the back tee and without any mulligans, you can stand taller and look anyone in the eyes.
Thats good advice, for anyone.

John Daly sweats way to lead at PGA Championship
After the round, Daly revealed that he played no practice rounds at all this week because "it was too hot." Instead, he practiced by going to play the slots at a casino. He also said he had no idea how he played so well today and has no idea if he will keep it up tomorrow. But he did say he has a lot more confidence after today's round.
He also said that he believes the PGA should allow the players to wear shorts! That's my boy.

Tiger Woods pummels Rory Sabbatini again!
Tiger is threatening to shoot 62 today, which would be a major history record. Even if he doesn't, he's at -6 for the tourney, while Sabbatini is +10 and packing his bags. Who's beatable now?
UPDATE: You've gotta believe that most of the other PGA players must be really fed up with Rory Sabbatini for trying to slam Tiger Woods. Not because the players all like Tiger, but because Sabbatini's comments have given Tiger that little extra incentive to dominate as he's done before. No one on tour -- except for Sabbatini -- was stupid enough to try to incite Tiger by saying he's "more beatable than ever." Thanks to Rory, the PGA players may have no chance at the PGA and other upcoming majors.

Not too long ago Stricker lost his tour card and hit rock bottom with his golf swing. He hadn't won a stroke play PGA event in 11 years -- dating back to 1996. (He also won the Match Play Championship in 2001.) This year, Stricker had an exceptional 3rd round at the U.S. Open, only to fade on the last day with the jitters.
Today, though, Stricker was not to be denied. He's now No.1 in the FedEx Cup point standings. Way to go, Steve!

Steve Banky explains what he said to Rory Sabbatini
Banky said, "It was the last time I was going to see him. I didn't mean anything by it. I was hanging out there all day, waiting for him to come by. I was watching the leaderboard . . . I figured he was talking a better game than he was playing." That's when Banky asked Sabbatini whether he thought Tiger was still beatable.
"I think Rory stopped and pointed at me and asked me to get thrown out, and they obliged. I wasn't trying to dog him. That press conference he did he said he thought Tiger was beatable, so I just called him on it."

Rory Sabbatini criticizes Tiger Woods
"It's a disappointment because obviously the whole purpose of this new system was to try and create an atmosphere that would draw everybody to the final four events of the year. Obviously, it has kind of backfired by Tiger skipping the first event.
"Maybe change it so that you definitely have the incentive to play all four. Whether it be, you play three you only get 75 percent of the $10 million or you play two, you get 50 percent, make it something where, 'You want the $10 million, you've got to play for it.'
"But you know, if you can beat Tiger in the process, it makes it sweeter."
Asked about Tiger's excuse for skipping this week, "Oh, I definitely think it's something other than fatigue," Rory said.

Titleist NXT Extreme Golf Ball Review
Titleist has released new versions of the NXT Tour golf ball, the NXT Extreme and NXT Tour. I’ve been playing both flavors for a while now. In this article I’ll be reviewing the new NXT Extreme Golf Ball. My NXT Tour golf ball review can be found here.
Titleist NXT Extreme Golf Ball
The NXT Extreme is is a two piece (core and cover) distance ball. It is geared toward players who need distance and don’t need as much spin around the greens, and who don’t want to spend a ton of dough on a box of balls ($34.00). This would likely include about 90% of all amateur golfers. The ball is extremely durable, so if you can keep it in play you’ll be able to play very many holes with it.
The NXT Extreme is so durable that Titleist guarantees you won’t cut open the ball during normal play. If you do, Titleist will replace your cut ball with a whole sleeve of new ones.
Technology
The core of the NXT Extreme is made of Polybutadiene.
From WikiPedia: Polybutadiene is a synthetic rubber that has a high resistance to wear and is used especially in the manufacture of tires. It has also been used to coat or encapsulate electronic assemblies, offering extremely high electrical resistivity. It exhibits a recovery of 80% after stress is applied, a value only exceeded by elastin and resilin. Polybutadiene is a polymer formed from the polymerization of the monomer 1,3-butadiene. ….Right.
The cover of the NXT Extreme is made of Surlyn. Surlyn is a Dupont plastic which is very strong and resistant to cutting.
Dimples
Titleist has long employed a 392 dimple aerodynamic design. Their research has concluded that the 392 dimple pattern provides more carry and distance. There are five different sizes of dimples which are arranged in an icosahedral pattern.
Staggered Wave Parting Design
New for this year Titleist has introduced the “staggered wave parting design.” Titleist balls, including the NXT, ProV1 and ProV1x series have all had a visible seam. What they’re doing now is staggering the dimples where the seam is, to gain that real estate on the ball. This has allowed more dimple coverage and even better results in carry, distance and spin.
AIM System
No longer do you need to draw an aiming line on your ball with Titleist’s new A.I.M. system. A.I.M. is short for alignment integrated marking. They call it a system but come on. It’s just a line, right? Perhaps not. The arrows and lines give you conscious and subconscious influence on aim and club path.
On The Course
I’m not a “hard” ball player typically. I prefer softer cover balls and I usually play the Titleist ProV1. My main two reasons are the spin around the greens and the pain (or lack thereof) when I hit full shots. I’ve been battling golfer’s elbow for several years and I’ve just about got it beat. But when I hit hard balls, or a bunch of range balls for that matter, my pain starts to come back.
I found the NXT Extreme to be “extremely” long. Like I mentioned in my NXT Tour review, the biggest distance increase I noticed was in my irons. I was taking aerial photos of the green as my approach shots flew right over by one or two extra clubs. Once I adjusted and went one or two shorter clubs down I started hitting greens again.
I’m not a bomber, but I can poke my drives out there on an average of 290 or so. I’m definitely capable of going beyond 300 when my timing is right and I hit the sweet spot. I found the NXT capable of drives well over 300 years, but perhaps more importantly they were all pretty straight. With the Surlyn cover and the lower compression producing less spin, slices and hooks were easier to control.
Though I didn’t get any mad backspin I found that the Extreme stopped quite well on approach shots. Keeping in mind that this is a harder ball, I adjusted my shots around the green as well. Once I found the right touch or shot selection (like a bump and run), I found the consistency of the NXT Extreme excellent. I never ended up hitting a shot and wondering how my distance control was so bad.
NXT Extreme 1, Cart Path 0
One shot I hit on my home course, #13 hole, hit the cart path. This is a par-5, 528 yards. After hitting the cart path, my NXT ended up right at 145 yards out. I’d hit about a 380 yard drive, 80 of which was cart path. I examined the NXT for damage, but that Surlyn cover barely had a scratch. Other balls would be unplayable with an impact like that.
Conclusion
The NXT Extreme is a reasonably priced and very durable ball. It flies true, straight and long. It’s a bit too hard for my game and physical limitations with my elbows, but for the average amateur player this would be an excellent choice. I think the average Joe would hit a few more fairways and gain a noticeable bit of distance off the driver (and irons) compared to other golf balls.

Funny Golf Stories
In the early '90s, I was a guest at the Shady Oak Club in Fort Worth, Texas. Founded by Ben Hogan, by this time, the elderly Ben would spend his days in the grill overlooking the 18th hole. I was 12-over-par after 17 that day and was feeling good about my round until my approach at 18 found one of the greenside bunkers. I grabbed my sand wedge and as I readied to hit the shot, I noticed that Mr. Hogan was standing at the window watching me. Shaking like a leaf and with a bad case of the nervous sweats, I proceeded to blade the ball and hit it directly into the bunker on the opposite side of the green. I then repeated the performance and ended up about one foot from my original lie in the first bunker. As I readied my third bunker shot, I looked up towards the grill window and watched as Hogan sadly shook his head and turned away from the window, probably wondering who had let this bumbling cretin on his course. To this day, when I'm asked about the quality of my game, I honestly reply that I have a game that disgusted Ben Hogan.
It's a great story and one that can be appreciated by any golfer. However, I still think the funniest golf story is "The Hottest Driver." I still get a chuckle out of that one!

The next Nicklaus
Although Tiger Woods is still very young (31), you practically never hear any commentator talk about the "next Tiger." I think the reason is very simple: Tiger sets the bar, he will never be matched in talent, determination, and charisma. Except for his driving accuracy, it's hard to think of any area where Tiger has shortcomings. And it's hard to dislike the guy when he's so gracious in both victory and defeat, never really saying a bad word about anyone.
The bottom line is that there will never be the "next Tiger." Tiger's it.

I don't know who's crazier, the human golf tee or the guy swinging the club. I know that I don't have the cojones to do either.

Tiger putting painful smackdown on Sabbatini on Sunday
Can you guess what happened? After 6 holes, Tiger is 4-under FOR THE DAY and Sabbatini is 1-over. Within 6-holes, Tiger changed a 1-shot deficit to a 4-shot lead over Sabbatini. Talk about Tiger smackdown. This is why I love Tiger Woods.
This brings back flashbacks of the smackdown Tiger put on Stephen Ames, who criticized his ball striking.
Leaderboard
UPDATE: Oh my God. Tiger is beating Rory Sabbatini today by 10 strokes!!!! Tiger is 5 under for the day, Rory is 5 over for the day. Game over. Tiger has no mercy. I guess Tiger is more beatable than ever, Rory.

Rory Sabbatini is golf's biggest cry baby
Yesterday, Sabbatini was being so badly beaten by Tiger Woods (who Sabbatini earlier this year said "was more beatable than ever"), that Sabbatini took it out on a fan, retired firefighter Steve Banky. After the 9th hole (after Tiger just chipped in for a miraculous par, but Rory double bogeyed), Banky asked Sabbatini, `Hey, Rory. Still think Tiger's beatable?''
Sabbatini was furious and ordered a police officer, "Take his **** out of here." After his round, Sabbatini even implied the guy was drunk: "We're out here to do our job - let us do our job. Have a little bit of decorum, a little bit of class out there. I guess a few too many beers were talking.''
Talk about lack of class, Rory. I'm so glad Tiger Woods showed everyone the big loser that you are. You can talk the talk, but ...

Tiger Woods defends decision to skip FedEx Cup tourney
I always rate the year a success if I win a major championship. So capturing my fourth PGA title turned a good year into a great year. For me, the best part of the tournament was walking into the scoring trailer on Sunday and seeing Elin and Sam Alexis. I had no idea they would be there and it gave me chills. It was so special to instantly be able to share my victory with them.
My life has really evolved. In previous years, my mother and father would have been there. But we lost dad last year and mom doesn't travel to many tournaments any more. I'm so grateful to have Elin and Sam now. Afterward, a friend said, "Congratulations, Dad!" I liked the sound of that.
As I announced last week, I will not play in The Barclays. I fully support the tournament and the new FedEx Cup playoff series, and hope they understand. I need a little break to get ready for the final three events because I think it gives me the best chance to challenge for the title. Plus, I want to be sharp for the Presidents Cup the last week in September.
Next Tuesday, I'll be in New York to promote my new EA Sports video game Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2008. I'm excited about the new version and hope you will be, too!

Ernie Els thinks about what could've been
And I got off to just the kind of start I needed, playing great for the first eight holes and getting to three-under par for my round. With Tiger not making much forward progress in the early stages of his round, Id closed the gap to just a couple of shots. Then that birdie putt on nineman, that was a big putt right there. If I could have made that and then holed the short birdie putt that I had on 11, it would have really made a difference.
